Local folk musician Tim Easton held a relaxed CD release party for his latest album "Porcupine" in Joshua Tree, Calif., at the Starlite Courtyard on Friday, June 12, 2009. His soothing beats with a hint of blues, rock and folk flowed across the desert as friends, family and fans danced under a moonlit sky that breathed in a cool comfortable breeze.
Easton, who has released six albums since 1998, has received noticeable international success over the last decade. Raised in Ohio, Easton picked up different styles of music in the Midwest but eventually moved to Los Angeles for a change of pace.
Easton claims famous American folk/country musician Lucinda Williams to be an influence on his music and is very pleased to have toured with her in 2005. He has lived in Joshua Tree for the last four years, becoming a well-known musician and involved resident in the community. He even performs with local country band, The Thriftstore Allstars, every Sunday at the famous Pappy and Harriets Palace in nearby Pioneertown. When Easton is not recording music or performing for fans, he is creating artwork and publishing a hi-desert magazine known as "The Joshua Tree Republic."
A tour in the Midwest in the spring of 2009 promoted the release of "Porcupine." Easton is very proud of the music he has recorded and also the various musicians and producers with whom he collaborated order for the album to have an ideal rock ‘n’ roll sound.
“It’s a little louder,” commented Easton on his latest album, as he smoked a cigarette. “I knew I wanted to make a louder record, right off the bat.”
The CD release party in Joshua Tree was a great time for Easton to relax with members of the community. Attendees took advantage of the available wine as they sat at candlelit tables in the beautiful courtyard. Guests were even packed closely together as they intently listened to Easton perform songs such as, “Baltimore,” “Porcupine” and “Broke My Heart.” Easton was pleasantly surprised that so many people showed up, claiming he planned the event for a smaller crowd.
The large crowd was an overwhelming sign of Easton’s popularity in the desert. True World Gallery and Mount Fuji General Store were both sponsors of the event and even had their doors open for attendees to venture in and look at items on display.
“Tim Easton is a good friend and we love him,” said True World Gallery’s owner Bonnie Kopp, as Easton’s music belched in the background. “He is involved with Joshua Tree as much as he can.”
Eventually Easton mentioned that yes, there was in fact a curfew time for the Joshua Tree community. The crowed was hyped up as Easton sang confidently into his microphone and hopped back on one foot with his guitar head pointed up towards the sky. The show ended on a positive note as a bright smile from Easton bid farewell to the supportive crowd.
“I love my life,” Easton said cheerfully at the end of the show. Easton is excited about the different options available to him in the future of his music career, and is a pleasure for the hi-desert community.
