The June New Moon over Coachella
By Johnny Mirehiel
This column is a regular feature on these Desert Cities Guides pages appearing at each New Moon. Astrologer Johnny Mirehiel uses the astrological chart of the New Moon each month as it appears over the heart of the Coachella Valley.
Here is the chart of that moment for this month:
With a Sun/Moon conjunction in Cancer, in the 10th house in an exact opposition with Pluto in Capricorn, this is the New Moon to risk a full-hearted, active surrender into fearless compassion for self and others. Cancer rules the power of the archetypal feminine. The opposition from Pluto in the 4th house requires an honest appraisal of our own emotional agendas and desire for power. It’s the perfect time to open the channel to inner wisdom and self-knowing. The New Moon-Pluto opposition will also amplify emotional intensity, especially with the Moon at perigee (closest to the earth).
Another notable feature of this opposition is that while Cancer is the archetypal sign of the Mother, Capricorn, its polar opposite, is the archetype for the Father. With these signs featured prominently in this chart we can plant the seeds of balance between the masculine and feminine energies within us. Cancer is also associated with the “home,” so the Cancer New Moon is a sort of stress test regarding home, family, and the most personal aspects of our lives. Its position in the 10th house places an emphasis, for those of us in this part of the world, on the conflict between our needs to achieve something of value in the public arena and the call to attend to our domestic responsibilities. This can, of course, be something of a problem. The solution is the application of loving kindness and compassion to any stressors between these two important areas of our lives.
You may also notice that Venus and Mars (the traditional symbols of feminine and masculine energies) are exactly conjunct at 16° of Taurus in the 8th house. While receiving strong support from Saturn in the 12th house, this pair, together in amorous Taurus, might just herald, for those of you who are unattached, the arrival of someone special and enduring in your life. Those of you fortunate enough to have that certain someone in your life, well then, be sure to make some alone time for romance. In either case, the lines of communication are now fully open, as Mercury has ended its latest nasty communication clogging retrograde. So don’t be shy. Go for it!
The Ascendant here in the Coachella Valley is at 28° of Virgo. The Sabian symbol for this degree is “A man is gaining secret knowledge from an ancient scroll he is reading.” Here we are being told that astrology, perhaps the most ancient “scroll” available to mankind, can help us attain some very important information. In this chart that important information refers back to the Cancer New Moon’s call for an open expression of unconditional love.
Those of you who are interested may want to check out the Astrodienst, web site for a copy of you own chart to see into which house the New Moon falls. This will give you a good idea about the areas of your life that will be most affected by the New Moon/Pluto stress-indicating opposition:

2nd / 8th Houses – of money, resources and values vs. sex, the occult, debt and metaphysics;
